Kima Otung at The FIFA World Cup 2022

Kima Otung’s music is being showcased at The World Cup 2022 in Qatar. With the support of the British Council and Wales Arts international, she was selected for the UK Great Campaign for her music to be platformed at the global sporting event in Qatar. As a Welsh music artist, this is a memorable moment as it is the first time Wales has competed in a World Cup in 64 years and Kima is proud to represent the UK. Although Wales are no longer in the competition, they still have a strong voice in Qatar in the form of Kima’s vocals for the entirety of The World Cup.

Kima’s music can be found at The Garden of GREAT in Doha, which David Beckham opened on Monday 21st November. The garden showcases the very best of UK music, fashion, design and food as part of the Government’s “Great” campaign; from ice cream crafted by Michelin starred chef Vineet Bhatia, to flowers scented by Jo Malone CBE. Kima was selected to represent the UK for music. A film highlighting Kima’s work as a music artist is being played at the Garden, alongside Nadiya Hussein, the winner of The Great British Bakeoff, who speaks about UK cuisine.

Three of Kima’s songs are being showcased in Qatar, “I’m Cute”, “Go Crazy” and her new single which she is releasing for the World Cup “New New”. The songs are part of an interactive installation of stepping stones; when they’re pressed, the music plays, along with a plaque highlighting Kima’s story and creative process.

The Garden of GREAT was created in Qatar for The World Cup and will include DJing sets by BBC Radio 1Xtra’s Jamz Supernova and Welsh DJ Katie Owen. You can read more on The GREAT Campaign’s website, here: https://www.greatcampaign.com/garden-of-great

Kima Otung Biography

Kima grew up in Pontypridd, a small town in the valleys of South Wales. Her love for music was cultivated when she was accepted as the youngest member of the Welsh National Youth Opera at 14 years old. The opera was directed by Tim Rhys Evans, founder of global choir’s Only Men Aloud and Only Boys Aloud. Classical music, along with gospel music and Motown (which was the soundtrack to her childhood) still influence her sound to this day.

Kima is an independent, self-managed Welsh-Nigerian Pop / R&B music artist. Her music has been featured multiple times on ITV’s hit shows Love Island and This Morning, BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing as well as shows on Amazon Prime, BT Sports and Sky. Recently, Kima’s single charted at number 6 on Shazam’s Discovery Charts and her debut EP, “Note to Self” has been played in rotation across BBC Radio and added to its “Welsh A List”. Kima has performed live sets on BBC Radio 1 and BBC Horizons, and she has wowed crowds with her performances at festivals across the UK.

Kima has worked on several projects at Abbey Road Studios with the likes of Michael Gracey, the director of Hollywood musical “The Greatest Showman” who describes her as “stupidly talented”. She has been interviewed live on Sky News, BBC Radio London and BBC Radio Wales as a result of her rise as a standout artist in her genre. In January 2021, Kima was awarded the PRS Women Make Music award, and this year she was awarded the PRS Momentum award as a result of the success of her debut EP.

Kima’s debut EP, “Note to Self” amassed hundreds of thousands of streams and fans made hundreds of videos on TikTok and Instagram, and she has garnered an online fanbase of over 50,000 fans. Kima has been written about in Refinery29, BBC News, Black Ballad, ASBO Magazine, Wordplay Magazine, Culture Custodian, Mixtape Madness, Buzz Mag, Music Insider and many more.

Kima’s mission with her music is to help women realise their greatness. She wants women everywhere to “be delusional” about their self-love and self-belief, and creates music to help them on that journey. Kima is a multi-instrumentalist and plays the piano, drums and guitar.
